Real-time Glucose Readings Have Elevated My Diabetes Management

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system has elevated my diabetes management in a busy period of my life with a 3-week old newborn and a 2-year old. I am always so thankful for how much technology has improved since my diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes in 1993.

When I heard about the real-time glucose readings1 feature on the app2 with the FreeStyle Libre 2 system, I was so excited to have the opportunity to use it and especially given it was during my pregnancy where control is so important. It was a huge honour for me as a FreeStyle Libre ambassador in Ireland to get to trial this.

Quick and easy transition

The transition was so quick and easy, as the instructions and usability of the sensor and app were great. Nowadays we usually have our mobile phones close by and I love that I have the freedom to open the app on my phone2 and have instant access to real-time readings1,  without having to scan the sensor. For me, this led to an increase in the frequency of information that I was getting from my sensor readings; I found myself checking my glucose levels even more often throughout the day.

Invaluable support for my busy life

As a mum and teacher, days are busy and unpredictable. I am able to open the app2 when I am going for my lunch break, during lessons and also when I am out exercising or training the school basketball team.

For me the most beneficial thing is the fact that I have the option to scan my sensor or use in the real-time readings feature1. I could not imagine my days without the FreeStyle Libre 2 system.

I have found the alarm feature3 amazing, as it gives me an audible alarm if and when my glucose levels are dropping and when they are low or high depending on the configured range.

I also love being able to add in my insulin and carbohydrates for meals in the app. This benefits me as I can check back over my days and make adjustments as necessary, all through my phone2.

A helping hand during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the range in diabetes control is very specific, with the range defined by my doctor who I had progress check-ins with every 2 weeks. My doctor and wider diabetes team linked with my FreeStyle Libre 2 system4 and were able to extract my results for the previous two weeks, which gave a true reflection of day-to-day life. This allowed them to offer valuable advice and support right up to my son being born.

My diabetes control throughout my pregnancy was fantastic and I am so proud of this and thankful for the FreeStyle Libre 2.

Overall I am delighted with the new features of the FreeStyle Libre 2 system and cannot speak highly enough about it.
