Technology That Helps Me Live The Life I Enjoy

By Amelia Lily, singer, performer and TV personality who lives with type 1 diabetes

My diabetes journey has always been extremely hard work due to my job and career as a performer.  I've been in the entertainment industry for 13 years and I've definitely had my ups and downs with my diabetes along the way; trying to balance the two has been difficult at times.

My lifestyle consists of very little routine and it’s really hard to get tight control all the time because of that. With age and advanced technology, my diabetes has become a lot more controlled and I feel as though I'm living proof that you can go on to achieve anything whilst living with diabetes.

The FreeStyle Libre 2 system has completely changed my life – I have used the technology for a few years now. Let me tell you, when I first got introduced to this system, I couldn't believe how much easier this was than pricking my finger constantly1. Especially whilst having to run on and off stage as a performer.

Peace of mind on stage

Now the transition from having to scan the sensor to having real-time readings2 straight to my phone3 has yet again made my life so much easier. As a performer when I am running around on stage, I have sometimes had to run off to check my levels; now to just be able to see my readings on the FreeStyle LibreLink app3 without having to scan makes such a difference. I find it less time consuming not having to scan. This is great in my line of work as I can get back on stage or screen in-between songs or scenes a lot quicker.

Another absolute blessing about the transition over to real-time readings2 has been my glucose control; my control has even got a lot tighter with having that bit more visibility with readings every minute.

Peace of mind off-stage

I have been travelling abroad a lot recently and it makes glucose control and diabetes management a little more difficult due to time differences etc. I’ve definitely been able to monitor my levels a lot more closely now with the real-time information2 which has given me a lot more flexibility and peace of mind when I’m travelling.

To be able to look at the app3 and it constantly give me a reading is basically a dream for someone living with diabetes! As someone who has a hectic life, this has had such a big impact. I will forever be grateful to this incredible piece of technology for helping me live the life I Iove and enjoy.
