How does sensor-based glucose monitoring work?

Blood glucose meters take glucose (sugar) readings from capillaries (blood vessels) with a finger prick.1 Sensor-based glucose monitoring systems are different. The FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor measures glucose levels from the interstitial fluid - a thin layer of fluid that surrounds the cells of the tissues in your skin. Glucose is also found in interstitial fluid because it moves there from blood vessels.2

When applied, the needle on the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor extends just past the skin into interstitial fluid where it can measure your glucose levels.
