FreeStyle Libre 2 coverage in PEI

Is the FreeStyle Libre 2 system covered in Prince Edward Island?

Yes! The FreeStyle Libre 2 system is reimbursed under the Glucose Sensor Program.

Those eligible must be:

  • 4 years of age or older
  • On multiple daily injections of insulin (three or more) or using an insulin pump, and
  • Must be enrolled in the Glucose Sensor Program

Am I eligible for coverage?

You may be eligible for coverage for the FreeStyle Libre 2 system if you are:

  • 4 years of age or older
  • On multiple daily injections of insulin (three or more) or using an insulin pump, and
  • Enrolled in the Glucose Sensor Program

You are eligible for the Glucose Sensor Program if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with diabetes
  • Are a PEI resident as defined by the Drug Cost Assistance Act (PDF 400 KB)
  • Have a valid PEI Health Card
  • Filed your most recent income tax return for the most recent year, and
  • Rely on an insulin pump or three or more daily injections of insulin to manage your diabetes

What is covered?

Coverage includes the FreeStyle Libre 2 system sensors. A free reader (where required) is available by contacting Libre customer service at 1-888-205-8296.

Are there any limitations I should know about?

Two sensors can be dispensed from your pharmacy every 28 days (sensor wear time is 14 days). The maximum number of sensors you can be covered for each year is 26.

Once I’m enrolled in the Glucose Sensor Program, how do I get reimbursed for the FreeStyle Libre 2 system?

First, talk to your healthcare professional to get a prescription. If you qualify for reimbursement, your healthcare provider will submit a Special Authority request on your behalf. Upon approval of your request, your claim for the FreeStyle Libre 2 system will be processed like any other claim at the local pharmacy.

Are there any out-of-pocket costs?

Yes, you may have to pay a co-payment, depending on your household income and whether or not you have private insurance. To learn more, visit the Glucose Sensor Program website.  

How do I apply for the Glucose Sensor Program?

When do my benefits for the Glucose Sensor Program end?

Your benefits last up to a maximum of one year OR the portion of the year after your approval until June 30th.

You must reapply for the Glucose Sensor Program by June 30th each year. You can submit your renewal anytime between April 1st and June 30th. Please visit the Renew your Insulin Pump and or Glucose Sensor program benefits web page for information on how to reapply.

Can I get reimbursed if I purchased the FreeStyle Libre 2 system prior to enrolling in the Glucose Sensor Program?

Unfortunately, no. You will not be reimbursed for sensors you have already purchased.
