The FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System is designed to replace routine blood glucose monitoring^*. The system represents one of the products in a new category of flash glucose monitoring, which is a type of continuous glucose monitoring system.  It is different traditional continuous glucose monitoring systems which typically have alarms. This system may provide a good alternative for patients that are bothered by alarms or suffer from ‘alarm fatigue’ but still want real time glucose information.

^*A fingerstick test using a blood glucose meter is required during times of rapidly changing glucose levels when interstitial fluid glucose levels may not accurately reflect blood glucose levels or if hypoglycaemia or impending hypoglycaemia is reported by the system or when symptoms do not match the system readings.
